Erythematosus
Lupus erythematosus A classic example of a disease, multi-systemic autoimmune disease (SLE), also known as lupus. Often called "the great imitator, lupus can mimic almost any disease state. The signs of SLE can be acute (sudden) or chronic and are often cyclical. Fluctuating fever unresponsive to antibiotics, is a sign, Hallmark, as a stiff gait or movement (lameness, polyarthritis, see below). Other signs of May, including anemia or thrombocytopenia, leukopenia (low white blood cell count) or a symmetrical dermatitis, especially in the bridge of the nose ( "butterfly lesion ').

Two systems of other organs may be affected by SLE. Polymyositis, an inflammation of several muscles, causes abnormal gait, muscle wasting, fever and pain, and changes in the attitude of a dog that does hurt expected. It is a similar inflammation of the glomeruli, the functional unit of the kidney, as a condition glomerulonephritis. This leads to loss of protein in the urine, and finally backnal () kidney failure.

As if) the diagnosis of diseases such as CBC (complete blood count, the serum biochemical analysis and urinalysis starting points. The anti-nuclear antibody (ANA) has erythematosus a litmus test for the diagnosis of lupus. The diagnosis is a consistent positive cases and other evidence is less affected by time and treatment with steroids. This test requires only a few milliliters of serum, to a veterinary laboratory that has been sent to experts in animal experiments.

The treatment is based on anti-inflammatory effects of corticosteroids and immunosuppressant Imuran and Cytoxan, or more, discussed in the January issue. Adjusted due to the strong impact of lupus, support for other therapies, to each according to need. Treatment with antibiotics is important for dogs with infections due to low white blood cell count and immunosuppressive therapy. Support for dogs with kidney failure in May include fluid therapy and a diet low in protein.

The prognosis of SLE patients is guarded, especially when complicated by KidnerEY disorder. Severe infections of the kidney (pyelonephritis), joints (be), septic arthritis) or blood (sepsis treated in general no evidence of extensive disease.
